ארגון כלי עבודה
לפני כמה חודשים ארגנתי מחדש את חדר העבודה שלי, אחד הדברים שרציתי לעשות כבר הרבה זמן הוא מתלה לכלי העבודה. בדרך כלל היתה לי מגירה שבה הכל היה זרוק, אבל תמיד הרגיז אותי לחפש חצי שעה איפה המברג פיליפס הקטן לעזעזל.
אז חיפשתי באינטרנט והגעתי ללוחות עם חורים, pegboard בלע״ז. היו שתי בעיות: זה נורא יקר בארץ, והמתלים היו לא ממש מוצלחים. את הבעיה הראשונה פתרתי עם דיקט ומקדחה, בשביל השניה הייתי צריך להפעיל את המדפסת תלת מימד.
backing up google photos into freenas
I take a lot of pictures. up until recently I just downloaded them manually into my computer. but following the tech trends I have moved to uploading my phone photos to the google photos cloud.
to be honest, I trust google engineers to do better job than me in backing up thier servers and making sure I don’t loose all those memories. but still I wanted to hace a local copy.
I’ve upgraded my home server to FreeNAS and thought it was a great operatunity to use it’s cloud backup options, when google threw an unexpected surprise. they are splitting up google photos and google drive, which was the only way to access these photos from another server.

לפרוייקט שאני בונה הייתי צריך חתיכה של פרספקס. זה הפלסטיק השקוף הזה. אתם יודעים כמה עולה חתיכה של 20 על 30 ס״מ ? האמת, שגם אני לא. חיפשתי ברשת במשך שעה, מצאתי אתרים של יותר מ10 ספקים שונים , על חלקם קיבלתי גם המלצות בפורומים ובאף אחד מהם לא הופיע מחיר. בכמה יש טלפון לפניות, באחרים יש טופס פניה להצעת מחיר. בשאר יש פשוט הרבה מלל שיווקי חסר משמעות. כפתור קניה ? אין
קורס ארדואינו לבית ספר
לפני כשנה התחילה בבית הספר של הבת שלי יוזמה להקים ׳מייקרספייס׳. פניתי למורה למדעים שדחף את הרעיון והצעתי את עזרתי. סיפרתי לו שיש לי ערמה של לוחות ארדואינו וחלקים נוספים שאשמח לתרום. אבל באופן מפתיע הוא הציע שאולי גם אלמד שיעור בנושא.
לאחר שיכנוע קל מצד הילדה והאישה הסכמתי והתחלתי לגלגל את הרעיון. למרות שלא ממש ידעתי מה לעשות.
ראשית הזמנתי מסין מספר לוחות של ארדואינו לאונרדו ומספר חיישנים שנראו לי שימושיים. ואז התחלתי לחפש ברשת מערכי שיעור. מסתבר שרוב הערכות לימוד והקורסים הקיימים הם קצרי טווח, כלומר מספר קצר של שיעורים שמציגים את הרעיונות הבסיסים ומשאירים לתלמיד להמשיך משם בכוחות עצמו. לי צפוי שיעור של שעה בכל שבוע במשך שנת לימודים.

לקראת חופשת הפסח החלטתי להפריח בלון נוסף.
הרכבתי מעגל מהחלקים שנשארו לי מהפעמים הקודמות, ואילו את התוכנה כתבתי מחדש כדי לקבל יותר אינפורציה ויכולת לאתר תקלות.
התחזית הראתה לקראת סוף החג יש רגיעה ברוחות מה שמאפשר טיסה רגועה וקצרה, כלומר להמריא מאזור החוף וליפול מערבית לירדן
לאחר כמה עיקובים בבוקר ארזתי את החפצים ויצאנו לכיוון קיבוץ החותרים.

לפני מספר ימים נקראתי בדחיפות לייעץ בישיבה עם מנכל של חברה מסוימת. המתכנתת שתיחזקה את המערכת העיקרית של אותה חברה הודיעה שהיא מתפטרת והיה צריך להחליט מה לעשות.
המנהל שאחראי על הנושא היה מיואש עוד הרבה לפני זה. המערכת המדוברת נכתבה לפני מעל ל20 שנה וככזו היתה מורכבת ממגוון טכנולוגיות מיושנות, שפות טכנות שפסו מהעולם והמון המון בעיות לתחזק ועל כך זה גם לקוחות עם דרישות חדשות. רוב הזמן עבר בכיבוי שריפות בעוד אותו עניין לפתח מוצרים חדשים בטכנולוגיה עדכנית, וכל המורשת הזו גם ככה ישבה לו כאבן ריחיים. ההתפתרות היתה רק הקש ששבר את גב הגמל.
speeding up python on the raspberry pi
As a young engineer I was writing image processing real-time embedded software for a living. we used the DSP chips for all they could offer, and used to rewrote parts of the algorithms in assembly so we can shave off a few cycles per pixel and squese out a bit more of proccessor power.
recently i’ve been writeing a piece of software for my High Altitude Balloon. the original code was written in C and bash, but was hard to manage. so for this release I used python as the programming language. for most used this is a great choise. it’s robust, easy to write and debug, and a pleassure to use it’s flexible data stractures.
while python it not concidered a “fast” language due to the use of an interpreter, it was quite all right for most of my not-so-ergent needs.
but then I got a piece of code that converts a data stream to audio file that is transmitted back to ground. when I needed to send a large image file, this modem took several minutes to do the jobs. this was not ok. so I started to dig into the code to see what’s going on.

one of the good things that worked during my last balloon launch was the transmission of images from the balloon using SSTV.
Due to the geography of my country, it’s very difficult to catch the balloon after it lands. so up until now I wasn’t able to recover the memory stick from the camera. so, it was great fun to finally see some pictures from up there.
it was especially important as the GPS broke down 5 minutes into the flight. but I was able to identify some landscape features and draw a rough map of its heading.
but the technology did start to show it age.
